How to get the Mushroom NPC in Terraria

The mushroom man is an NPC in Terraria. NPCs (Non-player characters) play very pivotal roles in Terraria.

As such, it’s important to know how, where, and when to get them. In this article, we’ll discuss how to get the mushroom man in Terraria and everything else about the character.

Who is the Mushroom NPC in Terraria?

First, the mushroom NPC is known as the Truffle. He could also go by the following names:

  • Amanita
  • Morel
  • Enoki
  • Porcini

For him to show up, you must be in Hardmode and the only way to get there is to defeat the Wall of Flesh.

Next, there should be a vacant house in or close to a surface glowing mushroom biome. Unfortunately, these biomes don’t generate naturally. So, you need to produce one ASAP.

How to create the surface glowing mushroom biomes

Mushrooms in Terraria

Even though the mushroom NPC doesn’t appear until you enter Hardmode, you can still create the surface glowing biome and house pre-Hardmode—in preparation for his arrival.

But, you should know that the enemies that could spawn in the biome are more powerful than the other enemies in pre-Hardmode.

You will need at least 100 mud blocks and 100 mushroom grass seeds to create the biome. Simply arrange the mud blocks in a horizontal row and plant the mushroom grass seeds in the blocks.

Next to the mud blocks, you need to have an equal number of empty cells so that there are more blocks for the mushroom grass to spread to, thus speeding up the process.

If you’re wondering about how to get mushroom grass seeds, there are two options:

  • Harvest glowing mushrooms in Terraria to drop the seeds.
  • Buy the seeds from the Dryad in Glowing mushroom biome for 150 each.

The place you choose to create the glowing mushroom biome should be isolated to prevent mobs from spawning there. You should consider a floating island.

If you don’t want to go through the whole planting process, you can spray the Jungle with the Clentaminator using Dark Blue Solution and you’ll get a glowing mushroom biome.

Build the house

Once the glowing mushroom biome is ready, you must build the house. You can use any type of building material as long as the ground features mud and mushroom. However, some players recommend using glowing mushrooms to build the house. So you can consider it, in case you encounter any issues.

When you get the error message “This housing does not meet the requirements for a Truffle” then the house is invalid. Chances are there’s too much corruption or crimson grass beneath the house or you might have skipped an important step.

Inside the house, the Truffle will need a table, chair, light source, and back wall.

You should consider building more houses for other NPCs because having more NPCs reduces the rate at which enemies spawn in the area.

Items sold by a mushroom NPC in Terraria

After moving in, the Truffle will have a couple of items to sell to you—usually, it’s after you’ve accomplished a milestone of killing some strong bosses.

  • Mushroom cap: You’ll need 2 gold coins to purchase this item. It’s always available.
  • Strange glowing mushroom: The cost of this baby Truffle is 45 gold coins. He is always available.
  • Dark blue solution: This costs 25 silver coins and it’s always available.
  • Mushroom spear: You must defeat at least 1 mechanical boss and pay 70 gold coins to get this item.
  • Autohammer: The cost of this item is 1 platinum coin and defeating Plantera.
  • Hammush: Defeat one mechanical boss and pay 40 gold coins to get this item.
  • Any pylon: The Truffle must be in a specific biome and happy enough when you pay him 10 gold coins for this item.

Other important factors to note about the Mushroom NPC

  • The mushroom NPC’s eyes and the top of his head glow when he’s in the dark.
  • Together with the Witch Doctor in the Nintendo 3DS version, they are the only NPCs that must have specific biomes to live in.
  • He is the only NPC who doesn’t keep his arms bent while walking. He sways them side to side.
  • Despite having two eyes in certain achievement icons, the mushroom NPC is often depicted as having one eye.
  • When in danger, Truffles release mushroom spores into the air. This is known to have the highest DPS of any NPC.
